It’s been a good year for PwC’s soon-to-be chairman Kevin Ellis

Congratulations to bean-counting boss Kevin Ellis.

The managing partner at PwC has just been elected as the audit firm's new chairman, and his bosses aren't the only ones who are impressed with his work.

He will succeed Ian Powell, who retires from PwC on 30 June after 39 years of service with the firm.

Ian Powell, Chairman and Senior Partner of PwC UK, said: "I’ve seen at first hand Kevin’s energy, enthusiasm and commitment to our clients and people. He has made a significant contribution to the leadership of the UK firm over the past eight years and brings the right qualities, experience and skills to lead the firm to continued success."

"At a time of rapid technological change and economic opportunity I am certain that Kevin will provide strong leadership."

Ellis said: "I’m honoured to have been elected as Chairman and Senior Partner of PwC in the UK and Middle East."

"I will remain focused on delivering the best of PwC to our clients while continuing to invest in our people, skills and technology – all of which are key to our future success."

Ellis will take up the role of chairman of the business advisory firm's UK and Middle East operations this July, but the auditing boss might want to leave off the celebrations until after the Business LGBT Awards next week.

Ellis, alongside Unilever chief exec Paul Polman and Dell president Aongus Hegarty, has been shortlisted for the coveted Corporate Straight Ally of the Year award at the so-called "Gay Oscars" of the business sector for his efforts to promote diversity at the audit firm. He is the board sponsor of PwC's diversity and inclusiveness network.

The winners of the LGBT Awards will be announced on 13 may – two weeks time – so perhaps Ellis should hold off popping his bottle of Champagne for a little while longer…
