WINNERS & LOSERS

A WEEKEND is a long time in sport – as this lot will attest. But while for some it was one to remember, others may wish they had never set foot out of the house. Here are this weekend’s heroes and villains.

WINNER
DIMITAR BERBATOV
Much maligned since his £30.75m move from Tottenham in August 2008, the Bulgarian enjoyed his finest hour at Old Trafford with a stunning hat-trick against rivals Liverpool.

WINNER
IAN BELL
Followed up his crucial ton for Warwickshire in midweek with another brilliant century to help his side win the Clydesdale 40 final at Lord’s. His reward was a recall to the England one-day squad.

WINNER
MARK CAVENDISH
Became the first Briton since Malcolm Elliott in 1989 to win a Grand Tour sprinters’ title in the Tour of Spain. Cav now has his sights on becoming the first British world champion in 45 years.

LOSER
SOMERSET CCC
Ok, so the loser tag may be harsh, but it’s been a desperately unlucky season for the Cidermen, who missed out on all three domestic titles by the tiniest of margins, including the Clydesdale 40 final.

LOSER
SAM ALLARDYCE
The Blackburn boss followed up his bizarre claims that he’s more suited to Real Madrid or Inter Milan by saying he was on an equal footing with Arsene Wenger. The trophy cabinet would suggest otherwise Sam!
