Tottenham agree £12m transfer fee for Njie but made to wait for Lyon forward

Tottenham have been warned that they will have to wait to sign forward Clinton Njie from Lyon, despite striking a £12m deal for the Cameroon international.

The French club’s president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed the quick, versatile 21-year-old was close to a move to White Hart Lane but that Lyon wanted to land a replacement before sanctioning his exit.

“We are close to an agreement but there’s no urgency for us,” Aulas said. “We want to complete our own signings first but I thank [Spurs chairman] Daniel Levy to have made an offer that we now regard as consistent.”

Tottenham are thought to have offered £10m plus around £2m in add-ons for Njie, who can play anywhere across the front three and scored eight goals in 33 appearances last season.

He is due to provide forward support for Harry Kane, who started last season on the fringes of the squad but scored 31 in a breakthrough campaign and is now Spurs’ only reliable source of goals.

Njie, who has six goals from nine Cameroon games, also only became a first-team regular last term, playing on both the right wing and then largely as a centre-forward as Lyon finished second in Ligue 1.

West Ham, meanwhile, appear likely to be frustrated in their pursuit of Javier Hernandez, with Manchester United expected to retain the Mexico striker as back-up to Wayne Rooney.

United themselves are set to miss out on Sergio Ramos, who is set to sign a new contract at Real Madrid after a summer of being pursued by Louis van Gaal’s side.

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has joined Roma on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer. Roma have agreed to pay almost £3m for the loan and a further £8m to complete the signing next summer.
