CHELSEA playmaker Eden Hazard was last night crowned PFA Player of the Year at the 42nd edition of the awards held at the Grosvenor Hotel in London.

The 24-year-old followed up his PFA Young Player of the Year gong last term by taking this season’s major accolade after netting 18 goals across all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s runaway Premier League leaders.

Belgium’s Hazard fought off competition from team-mate Diego Costa, prolific Tottenham marksman Harry Kane, Arsenal talisman Alexis Sanchez, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool.

“I’m very happy. One day I want to be the best and what I did this season is play very well,” said Hazard. “I don’t know if I deserve to win but it is good for me.”

Kane, meanwhile, brushed aside any disappointment of not landing the big prize by being named PFA Young Player of the Year following a breathtaking breakthrough season which has seen the 21-year-old bag 30 goals. He added: “It is amazing, hopefully the first of many to come. I have to keep working hard, but to be recognised by your fellow players is something special.”
