Q. I can’t stand clothes shopping, but I’ve a feeling it’s about time I replaced some of my old togs. I don’t really know where to start – any tips?

A.With the new season upon us, it is a good time to for a wardrobe update. It is best to concentrate on updating key classics.

Your wardrobe staples need to be fresh and new so unless you are seriously going to work a look, shabby chic is best left to the professionals.

Start with refreshing your jeans – go for a darker wash rather than a faded or distressed pair. The stronger shade will be more flattering, especially if you are more rugby player than fashion student in physique. They will also be just as appropriate during the day with a t-shirt as with a shirt and blazer in the evening.

You will see a lot of skinny tapered cuts which can look great but do look out of place if you have any little bulges, so if you prefer a beer to bikram yoga, a generous straight cut is generally safer.

Diesel still make a good classic cut – try a Larkee style in dark wash.

Get a new pair of shoes. Women have no problem spending on shoes and men should do the same. They are the first thing a woman will notice and can even help your posture and gait. A slightly rounded but angular shape is modern.

Make sure your suits and shirts are modern – if you haven’t been shopping for a while, this is the place to start.

A well cut suit will hide all manner of sins but if it is outdated or shabby it will have the opposite effect. Richard James make the perfect modern suit which looks great on all body shapes.

For the weekend, make sure you have a good blazer to throw over a t-shirt and jeans.

Keep your accessories simple, but a good scarf can finish off a look in the Autumn. Go for a thin cashmere for some cosy warmth without suffocating bulk.
