THREE OTHER RESTAURANTS IN FORMER BANKS

1 LOMBARD STREET
You could argue that 1 Lombard, with its palladian entrance opposite the Bank of England, has the most desirable restaurant location in the City, and it also has some of the best food. Under a fabulous neoclassical dome you can enjoy some serious haute cuisine from chef patron Herbert Berger. 1 Lombard Street, EC3V 9AA. www.1lombardstreet.com.

THE MERCER
The Mercer has established itself as a firm City favourite since opening in 2008, serving excellent British food in a smart dining room that brings the luxurious best out of the old building it inhabits by the Bank of England. Think large black columns, big art deco mirrors and old-fashioned, hanging globe lights. 34 Threadneedle Street, EC2R 8AY. www.themercer.co.uk.

JUST ST JAMES
Occupying a vast old banking building on St James’s Street, Just St James mixes huge marble pillars, elegant mirrors and a great domed ceiling with more modern elements, including a circular glass lift in the centre of the room. As well as dining on fine British food, you can enjoy a drink in the sizeable bar area. 12 St James Street, SW1A 1ER. www.juststjames.com.
