Deirdre runs in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury (3.05pm) tomorrow. I don’t want to upset any readers or owners of the horse but I can’t back her because of her name. It doesn’t give me that ‘Classic’ feeling. Instead, my money will be on MISHEER (2%) as she has the best two-year-old form in the book. Seven furlongs may be the limit of her powers so she isn’t on my shortlist for the Guineas at the moment.

In January, I suggested the 33/1 about FIELD DAY was mightily enticing for the 1000 Guineas and my view hasn’t changed. She is still available at 25/1 in places, so go to Oddschecker.com to see the latest 1000 Guineas prices.

Last year at Peter Chapple-Hyam’s stable, Andrew ‘Bert’ Black, Betfair founder and racehorse owner, was told by a lady that “with a name like that she’ll never come to anything”. The horse she was talking about was Andrew’s filly BLAST FURNACE (today, 4.25pm Newbury, 1%) who runs for the first time in a maiden.

My ante post bet for the 2000 Guineas runs tomorrow in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury (3.40pm). ARCANO (5%) must be backed to see off Canford Cliffs once more, especially over this seven furlong trip. The Hannon team also run Dick Turpin in the Greenham and I will be keeping a close eye on how this fellow runs as I think he is capable of winning some decent races this year.
