The Co-operative Group has embarked on a recruitment drive to find 24 candidates to join the representative body for its eight million members.

The mutually-owned group, which operates everything from supermarkets to funeral care services, has undergone a radical overhaul over the last two years that resulted in a shake-up of both its governance practices and operations.

The Co-op’s 100-strong members’ council is elected by its members, who own the business, and works closely with the board and make sure their views are heard.

Once elected, council members can serve a term of up to three years before being re-elected again. The council in turn elect a senate made up of 15 council members to co-ordinate their activities and liaise with the board.

Nick Crofts, president of the Members’ Council said: “We are seeking members to stand for election to our Council who have a passion to help us deliver a stronger, more co-operative business for our members and their communities.”

“We are committed to upholding co-operative values and principles which are at the heart of our business. Members on our Council have the opportunity to shape the future of one of the world’s largest consumer co-ops and help us to deliver our purpose of being a better way of doing business for you and your communities," he added.
