Surrey line up Lara return

SURREY are lining up an audacious bid to lure West Indian batting legend Brian Lara out of retirement to play Twenty20 cricket this summer.

Lara, 40, has been netting with the county at The Oval this week and is currently locked talks with Surrey director of cricket, Chris Adams, and chief executive Paul Sheldon over a short-term deal.

The Trinidad superstar has not played competitive cricket for two years, but the Lions are hoping they can tempt him back into a career playing the shorter form of the game.

“We have been in discussion with Brian regarding his possible involvement with the club,” Surrey said in a statement. “However we have no further comment to make at this stage.”

Lara is remembered for scoring the highest individual Test innings of 400 not out against England in Antigua in 2004, while also hitting the best first-class score, 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston in 1994.

Surrey have already recruited controversial Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds to their Twenty20 ranks this season.
