Isner survives Mahut rematch
TENNIS: American John Isner secured victory in two sets against Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in the Hopman Cup, as the pair met for the first time since last year’s epic first-round Wimbledon clash. It took over 11 hours for the pair to be separated on that occasion, but here the giant American required just 90 minutes to beat the Frenchman 6-3 7-6 in Perth.

Favre calls time on his career
NFL: Brett Favre has retired from the sport for a third time. Favre, 41, previously quit in 2008 and 2009 but returned on each occasion – firstly with the New York Jets and then with the Minnesota Vikings. But the quarterback, holder of most consecutive starts in the sport (321, including play-offs), insisted: “I know it’s time, and that’s OK. It is.” Favre won the Super Bowl with Green Bay in 1997 during a 16-season stint with the Packers and currently holds the NFL records for wins (186), passing yards (71,838), touchdown passes (508) and interceptions (335).

Lewis edges out Anderson
DARTS: Adrian Lewis, 25, hit a sensational nine-dart finish en route to claiming his first ever world championship after he conquered Gary Anderson 7-5 in a pulsating final at Alexandra Palace.
