Landfill Tax

  • Labour’s new quarry tax is rock bottom green policy

    Opinion

A man’s freedom to fill up his quarry absent extortion must stand, writes Charlie Amos in response to Labour's expanded landfill tax.

EAST MALLING, UNITED KINGDOM - JULY 06: An aerial view of the Oaken Wood and Hermitage Quarry on July 06, 2023 in East Malling, United Kingdom. Oaken Wood in Kent is a 'Plantation of Ancient Woodland Site', (PAWS), ancient woodland that has been felled and replanted. The woodland is currently under threat from a local quarry run by Gallagher Aggregates Ltd, excavating Kent Ragstone, which is used in construction for restoring old buildings. It is feared that the expansion could lead to the loss of a around 50 hectares of 'precious habitat', home to a wide range of wildlife including dormice, reptiles, butterflies and bats. The woodland lost around 32 hectares, due to the quarries to expansion, in 2013. The Woodland Trust have begun a campaign which has generated more than 7,000 letters of objection.
