German media giant Bertelsmann has a 75 per cent stake in Penguin Random House, which published bestseller Becoming after acquiring the book in a £48m deal that includes rights to former President Barack Obama's next book.

“We believe this could become the most successful memoir ever,” Bertelsmann chief executive Thomas Rabe told Bloomberg.

The book sales lifted Bertelsmann's total revenue to $20bn (£15.1bn), its highest since 2007.

Obama's memoir, which focuses on her journey from Chicago's south side to the White House, covers her and Barack's difficulties conceiving and her thoughts on current US President Donald Trump.
