League delays decision over QPR chief Briatore
MOTORSPORT mogul Flavio Briatore’s future at QPR remains in limbo after the Football League delayed a decision on whether to ban him from the game.
The Italian, who co-owns the west London club, faces being barred following his indefinite suspension from Formula One for race-fixing.
Football League rules forbid someone from being a director or majority shareholder at a club if they have been banned from another sport.
But League chiefs decided yesterday to write to the former boss of the Renault F1 team before taking any further action. Briatore was forced out of motorsport last month for ordering ex-Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr to crash during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.
A League statement read: “After considering all the information presently available to it and in the interest of due process, the Board will seek responses from Mr Briatore before commenting further.”
The League also ruled that clubs will in future have to declare the identities of their “beneficial owners”.
The move follows questioning of who is behind Munto Finance, the latest owners of Notts County, and uncertainty over the exact role of Leeds United chairman Ken Bates.
