Khan appeal over Peterson loss to be heard in January
THE INTERNATIONAL Boxing Federation have announced they will hear Amir Khan’s appeal against the controversial defeat he suffered against Lamont Peterson next month.
Khan is looking to overturn the verdict of the two judges who scored the fight in Peterson’s favour which resulted in the Brit surrendering his IBF and WBO light-welterweight titles.
The former Olympic silver medallist, who has also offered Peterson an immediate re-match, and his camp were dissatisfied with the way the contest, staged in Peterson’s hometown of Washington, was scored.
Team Khan and Golden Boy Promotions – the Bolton fighter’s US-based promoter – were also unimpressed with the performance of referee Joseph Cooper who deducted two points from the 25-year-old for pushing.
Richard Schaefer, head of Golden Boy Promotions claimed the IBF master scorecard “disappeared” immediately after the fight, only for an IBF scorecard to have turned up earlier this week.
“There is clearly some smoke in relation to the scorecards,” said Schaefer. “Also there is nothing in the rules related to pushing – even excessive pushing isn’t a foul.”
