Job market shakes off Brexit blues as number of City roles up for grabs soars in November

Londoners who plan to spend the festive period polishing off their CVs are in luck, as the City job market has surged back into action following the Brexit vote.

Figures out today from professional services recruiter Morgan McKinley show a six per cent year-on-year increase in professional jobs available for November, the first year-on-year rise recorded by the firm since June's vote to leave the EU.

"Heading into the new year with a higher base of jobs compared to last year bodes well for City employment in 2017," said Hakan Enver, operations director at Morgan McKinley Financial Services.

The boost in figures comes as the City battles bouts of uncertainty, including worries about what level of access to the Single Market can be secured following Brexit, question marks raised over political stability across the EU and concerns over the health of the banking sector following less-than-perfect results for some lenders in the Bank of England's stress tests last month.

Meanwhile, those seeking employment at pastures new will not be without competition, as the number of professionals looking for jobs also rose by 16 per cent year-on-year in November.

The picture is bleaker on a month-on-month basis, with a 14 per cent decrease in jobs on offer and a nine per cent decrease in those hunting for a new role. However, Morgan McKinley noted bonus season was looming, explaining the fall in willingness for workers to move jobs and employers to take on new staff.
