I’ll bring Euro joy to Real in two years, vows Mourinho
JOSE MOURINHO has targeted Champions League success with Real Madrid within two years after officially being unveiled as the Spanish giants’ new coach yesterday.
The Portuguese coach joined Real on a four-year deal after leading Inter Milan to an unprecedented Italian treble, including a first European Cup success in 45 years.
And the ex-Chelsea boss insists with the superstars he has inherited at the Bernabeu such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, he won’t need much time to bring the same success to Real. “The second year is key, it is the year when you find the right balance. It was during my second year at Chelsea that we reached the Champions League final,” he said.
“It was during my second year that we won the Champions League at Inter Milan,” he said. “I want to say that we don’t need much time to build a coherent team, to build a team that meets its objectives.”
Mourinho takes over from the sacked Manuel Pellegrini and told a packed press conference that getting the chance to coach Real Madrid fills a “void” on his CV.
“I don’t know if I was born to coach Real Madrid but I was born to be a football coach,” the 47-year-old added. “I love important challenges. I am Jose Mourinho and I don’t change. I arrive with all my qualities and my defects.
“My attraction to Real Madrid is due to its history, its frustrations in recent years and its expectations to win. It’s a unique club and I believe that not to coach Real leaves a void in a coach’s career. Luckily, I’ve had a beautiful career and it makes me proud to have come here.”
