Five fabulous roof terraces

NOTHING spells summer in the city better than an ice cold cocktail sipped at leisure from a roof terrace. The warm breeze, the open spaces and skyline views make for an alluring combination as the temperature rises. (Not to mention the feeling of calm and distance they offer from the hustle and bustle on the streets.)

This summer there are more great examples than ever to enjoy, in every corner of the capital.

City PM rounded up its five favourites.

AQUA

The sexiest thing to land in the busy Oxford Circus abyss since, well, ever. Aqua occupies the fifth floor of the former Dickens & Jones building and has two sizable roof terraces, one for each of its restaurants. www.aqua-london.com

ORRERY

Orrery opens its roof terrace this month, a serene gem in the heart of Marylebone perfect for dining al fresco on warm summer evenings. Grab a table and enjoy a class of Champagne with delicious French fare by Head Chef Ihor Tymchyshyn. It’s the area’s best-kept secret. www.orrery-restaurant.co.uk

THE BOUNDARY

Yacht chic in the heart of Shoreditch, with folding wooden chairs, wicker sofas covered in plush cream cushions and 360 degree views over the Gherkin, Canary Warf and Barbican. Our favourite spot is the sofas in front of the terrace’s stand-alone roaring wood burner. Bliss. www.theboundary.co.uk

EIGHT MOORGATE EC2

Worth the membership fee alone. Eight has two private members clubs in the city. Moorgate EC2, its latest addition, features an astounding 150 meter rooftop terrace kitted out with sleek modern sofas, potted olive trees and dining tables overlooking the skyline. www.eightclub.co.uk

VISTA, THE TRAFALGAR HOTEL

As locations go, you can’t really beat it. Vista sits atop the Trafalgar Hotel, overlooking the grandeur of Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, and Whitehall. Head there for sunset cocktail hour after work. You won’t be disappointed. Opens mid-June. www.thetrafalgar.com
