BRIAN LAWS saw his Burnley side bow out of the Premier League in their first season back and then admitted: “We’re not good enough”.
Two goals from Steven Gerrard and further second-half strikes from Maxi Rodriguez and Ryan Babel condemned the Clarets to the drop in front of the heartbroken home support at Turf Moor.
A run of 14 defeats from 17 matches in charge has left Laws under-fire, but the ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss is philosophical about returning to the Championship and insists he will be there to lead the fight back.
“I’ll be here next season and I’m looking forward to the fight and to bouncing back,” he said.
“You can’t console the players, they are as hurt as anyone else. It is the final nail in the coffin and it is a horrible feeling. The regret is not winning games but every player has gone out there and given their all. At the end of the day, if we’re not good enough, we’re not good enough.”
The result also brings Liverpool to within two points of fourth-placed Tottenham in the race for a Champions League place next season, although the Reds have played a game more. Boss Rafael Benitez admitted: “We know it will be very difficult but we will try. We were expecting something more but hopefully we can be stronger next season.”
