The Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump lauded the UK's decision to leave the European Union as a "great thing" in a visit to Scotland today and said the people of Britain had "taken back their country".

His comments came after he touched down in Ayrshire this morning to attend the opening of his revamped, £200m Turnberry Golf Resort. He also called the UK's 52 per cent vote for Brexit yesterday "historic" and "fantastic".

Trump confirmed his support for the Leave campaign last Sunday, saying he was hoping for an out vote due to concerns over EU bureaucracy and immigration.

"A Trump Administration pledges to strengthen our ties with a free and independent Britain, deepening our bonds in commerce, culture and mutual defense," he added in a statement available on his campaign website.

"The whole world is more peaceful and stable when our two countries – and our two peoples – are united together, as they will be under a Trump Administration."

It had previously been reported that Trump would be visiting his Scottish golf resort on 22 June, the day before referendum polls opened, rather than today.

At the beginning of this week, the presumptive Republican candidate reportedly fired one of his top aides, Corey Lewandowski as part of a preparatory campaign reshuffle to prepare for the election.
