A top aide to presumptive Republican candidate Donald Trump is to leave his post, according to reports.

Corey Lewandowski was fired by Trump, according to the New York Times, which added the decision was announced by the campaign.

It is thought that Trump was planning changes to his team to prepare for the general election, compared to the recently-won Republican nomination.

"The Donald J. Trump Campaign for President, which has set a historic record in the Republican primary having received almost 14 million votes, has today announced that Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign,” the campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, said in a statement.

“The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future.”

Lewandowski had a bumpy relationship with the national media, as well as members of the Republican National Committee.
