Capello to take time over England captain decision

ENGLAND head coach Fabio Capello is refusing to make a snap decision over Chelsea defender John Terry’s future as England captain.

Terry’s role as skipper has been questioned following newspaper allegations that he had an affair with the ex-girlfriend of international colleague and former Blues team-mate Wayne Bridge.

The Football Association has refused to be drawn into commenting publicly on the matter, leaving Capello to have the final say. And it is understood the Italian wants to mull it over, with the only deadline being next month’s friendly against Egypt.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that Terry will retain the armband, and his full support, at Stamford Bridge. The centre-back was in defiant form on Saturday, heading the winning goal as the Premier League leaders tightened their grip on top spot.

It is not the first time Terry has attracted unwelcome coverage in the press, and there have been calls for the FA to take a stand. But although Capello is a renowned disciplinarian, he is thought to consider players’ private lives of little importance as long as their performance on the pitch remains unaffected.

Terry has shown no signs of being affected but the question is whether Bridge is willing to play alongside him at this summer’s World Cup.
