FABIO CAPELLO was said to have held “very positive” talks with Club England chairman Sir Dave Richards last night to iron out his future.

The Italian is said to want assurances from Richards before agreeing to write off a release clause in his contract and commit his future until 2012.

The clause states that either party to be released from the agreement after the World Cup and with Capello linked with managerless Champions League winners Inter Milan, the Football Association are keen to settle the matter before the team depart for South Africa this week.

Richards and Capello were said to have talked casually over the phone instead of face-of-face, and an unnamed source insisted the discussions were “very positive”.

Meanwhile, Ireland boss and fellow Italian Giovanni Trapattoni believes Capello wants to take charge of Inter.

“Even before Mourinho left, I imagined the name of his possible replacement,” he said. “Inter’s next coach? At this time, Capello is the number one candidate. There’s no doubt about his wish, but it depends on his contract.”
