Barry inclusion is key, insists Green
ROBERT GREEN believes the inclusion of Gareth Barry is a massive boost to England’s World Cup hopes.
Barry was named in Fabio Capello’s squad for South Africa yesterday after he was cleared to play following an ankle injury.
And West Ham goalkeeper Green insists the Manchester City midfielder has a big role to play for England in South Africa.
“He’s a tremendous holding player in midfield which allows the guys to go on and play the game,” he said.
“A lot’s been said about Stevie G [Gerrard] and Frank [Lampard] not being able to do things, being held back, and he allows them to do that.
“He’s kind of an unsung hero in that respect to go out and do the job that he does and I think he’s proved his importance in that the manager has waited until news of whether he’d be fit to announce his squad. I’m looking forward to seeing him on the plane tomorrow.”
Green has also shown support to Sunderland striker Darren Bent, who missed out on a place in the 23-man party.
“Darren will be disappointed with that,” Green added. “It’s a tough choice to make but I’m sure it’s a pleasing choice for the manager because he’s got such difficult choices to make.”
Meanwhile, Green’s goalkeeping rival David James says every member of Capello’s squad is ready for duty.
The Portsmouth veteran, who won his 50th cap against Japan on Sunday, said: “The way Fabio Capello sorts things out I’m certain we’ll be in the best shape we can.
“I’m hoping it’s going to be me chosen [as No1 goalkeeper], of course, but it’s about the squad and everyone will be prepared if called upon for the first game.”
