Nigel Farage is moving to the US, according to reports

Nigel Farage is said to be planning to follow in the footsteps of millions of immigrants throughout history, with a move to the United States.

The interim Ukip leader has told friends that he and his wife are planning to emigrate, the Times has reported.

The news comes the morning after Farage attended a party held in his honour at the Ritz, where he was presented with a tray of Ferrero Rocher chocolates – a nod to his interest in becoming the UK's ambassador to the US.

Farage is a great fan of US President-elect Donald Trump, and it was Trump who tweeted that the Brexit frontman would make a good ambassador to the States – a suggestion that was promptly shot down by No 10.

However, the move may come across as odd to those who followed Farage in his quest to bring the UK out of the European Union. At the Ukip party conference in September, he celebrated the Brexit vote, stating: "We got our country back."  Is he bored already?

There's also a problem in that, at the moment, Farage is technically still Ukip's leader. With the party in disarray – the Electoral Commission has just opened an investigation into its donations, and finding a new party chief is proving troublesome – a leader living in another continent won't be terribly helpful.

Ukip has been approached for comment.
