As Donald Trump closes in on victory in the race for the White House, here are some of the policies he has promised:

The wall

Possibly Trump’s most infamous pledge, the Republican wants to build a wall between the United States and Mexico. Not only that, he wants the Mexicans to pay for it.

Muslim ban

Some good news: Although Trump previously suggested Muslims should be banned from entering the US, his running mate Mike Spence has since claimed the candidate has backtracked on those intentions.

A bit more on foreign policy

Extracts from Trump's campaign website:

Ensure our security procedures and refugee policy takes into account the security of the American people.

Suspend, on a temporary basis, immigration from some of the most dangerous and volatile regions of the world that have a history of exporting terrorism.

Trade

On to the serious stuff. Trump wants to withdraw the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership – which involves the US and 11 other countries, including Australia, Canada and Mexico.

He also wants to renegotiate the terms of America’s Nafta pact with Canada and Mexico.

Healthcare

Trump’s vision for healthcare is to repeal and replace Obamacare.

It is worth noting that Hillary Clinton has described Obamacare as “one of the great accomplishments not only of this president, but of the Democratic Party going back to Harry Truman”.

Taxes

Trump has pledged to reduce taxes across the board, “especially for working and middle-income Americans who will receive a massive tax reduction”.

He also wants to make America’s business tax rate from 35 per cent to 15 per cent in order to “keep jobs in America, create new opportunities and revitalise our economy”.
