Lord Farage? At least one Ukip leadership contender wants Nigel in the House of Lords

Ukip leadership candidate Lisa Duffy has called for Nigel Farage to be handed a peerage, granting the former leader a life-long seat in the House of Lords.

Farage is currently serving in the European Parliament, and will do so until the UK leaves the EU. He lost out at the 2015 General Election to former Ukipper Craig Mackinlay, now a Conservative.

However, in an interview with the Times, Ukip councillor and former party director Lisa Duffy has called for Farage to finally get his job in Westminster.

“I will be pushing for a campaign to get him into the Lords — he deserves it,” Duffy said.

Duffy is being backed in her leadership bid by former Ukip deputy chairman Suzanne Evans and MEP Patrick O'Flynn, who ran the party's economic policy until a fall-out with Farage.

However, she remains an outsider in the election, a distant second in William Hill's latest odds to deputy chairman Diane James.

James was being priced at 1/5 by the bookmaker this morning, compared to Duffy's price of 9/2.

The results will be announced at Ukip's annual conference in Bournemouth on 15 September.
