Sky Sports to offer extended Premier League highlights on demand next season

Sky will offer football fans the chance to catch up with extended highlights of Premier League games throughout the week with a new on demand package.

The broadcaster has secured the rights to "near-live extended highlights" from the Premier League to 2019, having already snapped up the live and online categories.

Extended highlights of all 212 Premier League matches not shown live will be available to watch through new club-specific on demand platforms which also include news and opinion coverage.

The deal also means that on Saturdays Sky Sports will continue to show one non-live match in full at 8pm and the rest from 10.30pm. Games on all other match days can be shown from 10pm.

Sky Sports' managing director Barney Francis said the channel was offering fans more flexibility.

He commented:

We are giving fans more ways to watch extended highlights, with the content now available on demand in the individual club section so fans can catch up on the action when they want.

The deal could be seen as a potential rival to BBC's Match of the Day highlights show – which cost the public broacaster £204m – however the Gary Lineker-hosted show has remained popular since Sky Sports won the "near-live" category in 2004 and began showing "Football First" highlights on Saturday evenings.

Sky paid £4.2bn to increase its share of live Premier League matches from 116 to 128 and stave off the threat of BT over the next three seasons.

Together the two broadcasters paid a record £5.1bn for 170 live matches.
