Zola hoping Franco factor gives Hammers cup boost

NEW West Ham signing Guillermo Franco is set to be thrust into action as Gianfranco Zola looks to ignite his side’s stuttering start to the season in the Carling Cup.

The Hammers have struggled thus far in the Premier League, winning one from five, and sit just above the drop zone on goal difference.

Franco, 32, only signed for the London club on a free transfer last week but Zola has no qualms about the Mexico striker’s limited preparation for tonight’s trip to Bolton.

He said: “Obviously he only arrived the other day, but this could give us a good chance to assess him and have an idea what he can give to us.

“He’s a main striker, very good at holding the ball. He likes to play off others so he’s a player who could make a difference for us.”
