As Zac Goldsmith is chosen as the Tories’ mayoral candidate, bookies put Labour’s Sadiq Khan ahead

Zac Goldsmith may have crossed one hurdle when he was selected as the Tories' candidate for next year's mayoral election – but he still has some way to go if he wants to win, if bookies are anything to go by.

Ladbrokes has put Goldsmith's odds of winning in next May's vote at 11/10, just behind Sadiq Khan, with odds of 8/11.

Meanwhile, outspoken former Respect MP George Galloway comes third, with odds of 50/1, while the Liberal Democrats' Caroline Pidgeon, Ukip's Peter Whittle and the Green Party's Sian Berry are all way behind, with odds of 100/1.

Having a flutter on London's next leader may seem like a bit of fun – but lest we forget, the bookies were significantly better at predicting the outcome of the General Election than pollsters, who expected an even divide between Labour and the Conservatives in May. Bookmakers were putting the Tories as the winners as far back as February.
