MANCHESTER UTD (1) vs WOLVES (0)

MANCHESTER UNITED youngster Danny Welbeck gave boss Sir Alex Ferguson a timely reminder of his ability as his strike sent them into round four. The 18-year-old, in his first start of the season, played a neat one-two with Michael Owen before firing low past Marcus Hahnemann in the 67th minute to sneak 10-man United into the fourth round.

The goal followed Fabio da Silva’s deserved red card for felling Michael Kightly when the striker was through on goal after half an hour.

Wolves surged forward late on but found the recalled Tomasz Kuszczak in fine form and despite being far from their best, United held on.
