World No1 Angelique Kerber can become only the second female tennis player in history to make more than $10m in a single year with victory at the 2016 WTA Finals.

The week long curtain call event of the WTA tennis season offers the top eight ranked women at the season's close the chance to boost their earnings by over $2m (£1.6m).

The champion of the Singapore tournament, the most lucrative event on the WTA after the grand slams, is awarded $1.75m in prize money but can take home even more based on the number of wins they pick up in the round robin stage.

German ace Kerber has already earned $8.7m in prize money this year as she has rocketed from No10 to No1 in the rankings, making it the best season of her career to date.

The 28-year-old has toppled Serena Williams from the No1 spot and could emulate the American legend by becoming the only other female player to earn eight figures from prize money in a single season.

Kerber and her seven competitors will all receive a flat sum of $151,000 for participating in the hard court event and are awarded a further $153,000 for every win in the round robin stage which sees the players split into two groups of four.

Progressing through the round robin and into the semi-finals is worth an additional $40,000.

The victorious finalist is paid $1.75m while the runner-up takes home a $590,000 consolation prize. Last year's champion Agnieszka Radwanska took home a total of $2.2m.

Unlike Radwanska, who won just once in the round robin stage before improving in a knock-out environment, Kerber would need to record at least two wins in the preliminary rounds to take her earnings past $10m.
