Wizz Air says summer flying on course to beat pre-pandemic levels
Wizz Air’s chief executive today said that the carrier was on track to fly more this summer than it did before the pandemic struck, a rare statement of confidence from an otherwise downbeat industry.
Speaking to a conference today, Jozsef Varadi said that the Hungarian flier was already operating at 90 per cent capacity, way ahead of many of its rivals.
He said that the carrier, which focuses on eastern Europe, would likely benefit from travel restrictions being loosed within the EU.
“We are ramping up. We are seeing a less constrained environment going into peak summer and quite likely we’re going to be above our 2019 capacity in a month or two from now,” Varadi said.
He also said that the carrier was largely operating at cash neutral levels.
Wizz Air has been among few carriers to continue to expand during the pandemic, launching dozens of new routes and opening new bases to take advantage of the travails of other airlines such as Norwegian.
And with the European Union (EU) having now committed to rolling out a digital vaccine passport by 1 July, it is now poised to reap the rewards of its endeavour.
This morning the European Parliament gave the certificate its final approval. Under the legislation, member states will have to refrain from imposing additional entry restrictions on those holdingthe certificates.
