Winter running essentials: The best gear for cold weather runs from trainers and gloves to iPhone armbands

Running in the colder months is great fun, just pick up the right gear.

KHOMO iPHONE 6 ARMBAND

Nobody runs without listening to a playlist on their iPhone these days. This one from Khomo is iPhone 6 and 6 Plus ready, and features a touch-responsive plastic sheath so your precious phone won’t croak when you’re out in the driving winter rain.
£12.99; amazon.com

INOV-8 X-TALON 190 FELL PRECISION FIT RUNNING SHOES

Winter means rain and mud and sleet and ice and snow and other things that make staying on two feet more difficult, especially when moving at speed. These running shoes come with stud-like “talons” to grip the ground and give you extra stability. They’re also waterproof.
£84.95; sportsshoes.com

180S EXOLITE GROOVE WITH SONY MP3 PLAYER

Baby, it’s cold outside – and your ears can get the worst of it. These earmuffs come with a built-in Sony MP3 player, meaning you’ll stay warm and get to listen to your favourite running tunes. They are waterproof, so a bit of rain won’t spoil your playlist.
$119; 180s.com

NIKE SHIELD GLOVES

Avoid frostbite by investing in a decent pair of gloves. These ones will keep the cold out and the moisture off your skin.
£30; nike.com

MIZUNO DYNAMOTION HIGH NECK LONG SLEEVE BASELAYER

If you’re planning on a winter run, a base-layer should be near the top of your priority list. It will keep you snug and dry and is thin enough to team with a jacket if the temperature drops.
£24.99, sportsshoes.com

GORE MYTHOS 2.0 WINDSTOPPER HAT

Keep your head warm with a windbreaking hat. This one will channel heat away from you as well as blocking out the cold. It will also wick liquid away from you for when you work up a sweat.
£29.99; goreapparel.co.uk

UNDER ARMOUR COMPRESSION TIGHTS

Compression leggings can help to stimulate bloodflow and help with support. The problem is they can look a bit naff. Not a problem with these supersmart ones from Under Armour. Prepare for some toasty runs ahead.
£42; underarmour.com

ADIDAS MEN’S RESPONSE ICON HOODIE SWEATSHIRT

Another running staple is a lightweight hoodie that will keep the rain off without causing you to overheat. This one comes in either grey or orange with reflective patches for night running. It also has thumb holes to help keep your hands warm – perfect.
£36; adidas.com

NORDIC GRIP ICE GRIPPER

A decent pair of cross-country trainers should be enough to see you through most of the winter, but if we end up with a very white Christmas, you may need to invest in a pair of these. They will attach to almost any trainer and provide the extra grip you need to run in snow and ice, with the studs configured for maximum traction. Now you have no excuse not to go for that run.
£19.99; amazon.com
