With the 2012 Olympics less than a year away the World Championships Daegu provided a strong indicator as to how our athletes will perform in London. On this evidence God Save The Queen won’t be getting too many airings.
WINNERS
DAI GREENE
The Welshman, already a European and Commonwealth gold medallist, will be looking to complete the set in London next year after a commanding performance in the 400m hurdles final.
HANNAH ENGLAND
In what was ultimately a disappointing championships for Britain’s women, the Oxfordshire-born runner’s silver in the 1,500m provided a rare highlight which came as a shock even to the 24-year-old herself.
MO FARAH
Britain’s long-distance king narrowly missed out on the gold medal in the 10,000m and went one better in the 5,000m to cement his superstar status ahead of next summer’s London Olympics.
LOSERS
JESSICA ENNIS
The London 2012 poster girl conceded a big lead after the first day of competition and struggled in the javelin meaning she ended up with silver, rather than the gold she had be targeting.
PHILLIPS IDOWU
The flamboyant triple jumper managed two season’s bests in the final of the triple jump but it still wasn’t enough for him to be able to defend his world title.
MEN’S 4X 100M TEAM
Defeating the world record breaking Jamaicans, anchored by Usain Bolt, was an impossible task but a medal was there for the taking until the mix-up between Marlon Devonish and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.
