Wing star Monye ready to make Lions Test bow

ENGLAND winger Ugo Monye insists he is “100 per cent ready” should he be chosen to make his British Lions Test debut against South Africa on Saturday.

The Harlequins ace has been in flying form for the Lions on their unbeaten tour so far, and is favourite to claim the left-wing spot for Saturday’s first Test in Durban.

A Lions Test call would represent a remarkable turnaround for the 26-year-old, who only made his England debut last autumn, but Monye remains unfazed by the transformation. He said: “I have no nerves, I feel as thought I have fitted really well into the squad and played quite well.

“I think timing is everything. I have got a lot of self-belief and my faith has helped me as well. I believe if you put your trust in the big man, everything is possible.”

The Lions are hoping to report a clean bill of health for Saturday’s Test, even though Irish full-back Rob Kearney will miss tomorrow night’s tour match with the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth with a dead leg.

The problem scrum-half area should also be cleared with Mike Blair and Mike Phillips undergoing late fitness tests today and Harry Ellis expected to recover from illness.
