Wimbledon quarter-final preview: Andy Murray talks of hormones but history certainly on his side in battle against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
While Britain’s Andy Murray is hoping for hormone assistance, history would suggest the world No2 is entering tomorrow’s Wimbledon quarter-final tie against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on much firmer ground.
“I’ve played Jo-Wilfried Tsonga a couple of times at Wimbledon and they both came down to a few points at key moments, so let’s hope the adrenaline pulls me through again,” wrote Murray in his online diary.
Tomorrow’s showdown on Centre Court will be the 15th career meeting between the duo, and Murray has dominated the Frenchman in their previous 14 tussles, winning 12. He also holds a 5-0 head-to-head record on grass.
Title-favourite Murray dispatched Tsonga in four sets in the 2010 quarter-final and 2012 semi-final at the All England Club, a repeat of which would be novel for the Scot, who is yet to drop a set at this year’s tournament.
Tsonga, meanwhile, has endured a different route. After comfortable wins in the opening rounds, the 12th then needed a fifth set, which ended 19-17, against John Isner, although fourth-round rival Richard Gasquet retired hurt at 4-2 in the first set.
