Wimbledon 2015: Liam Broady earned £47,000 from his grand slam debut

Most players have yet to step on the court, but Wimbledon 2015 already has its first great story after British number six Liam Broady came from two sets down in his Wimbledon debut.

In his first ever professional grand slam match, the youngster from Stockport overturned an early setback against Australian number one Marinko Matosevic to win 5-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 and more than double his annual salary in the process.

Even if he loses in the second round, Broady is guaranteed £47,000; small change as far as grand slam awards go (Wimbledon winners receive £1.9m) but still the biggest pay day of the youngster's career to date.

In fact, after being granted a wild card spot at this year's shampionships, Broady has exceeded his entire 2014 earnings when he picked up $25,250 (£16,043). Previously, his chunkiest prize money packet was the A$16,000 (£7,787) he received for reaching the third qualifying round of the Australian Open earlier this year.

For the 182nd ranked player in the world, who has made just over £65,000 in his career to date, the difference between winning and losing in today's match could spell a huge upgrade in lifestyle.

The 21-year-old is technically homeless, jumping from tournament to tournament and staying at friend's houses. In his last tournament, the Aegon Open in Nottingham earlier this month, Broady left with nothing after losing in the first round to Blaz Rola.

Broady is part of the first brother and sister sibling pairing to both be competing in the Wimbledon single's events for 37 years, with 25-year-old Naomi in action later this afternoon.

In 2010, he hinted at big things to come after reaching the junior single's final, and again showed his potential with a junior men's doubles triumph in 2011.

He will have the chance to add to his earnings in the men's doubles where he and partner Luke Bambridge face Jamie Murray and John Peers in the first round.
