Whitmarsh Button theory is ‘rubbish’, says Hamilton

MCLAREN team principal Martin Whitmarsh’s suggestion that Lewis Hamilton’s form has been adversely affected by the success of team-mate Jenson Button has been dismissed as “rubbish” by the 2008 world champion.

Although both men have been left trailing in the wake of Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel this season, Button has fared better, particularly in recent races, and currently heads his British compatriot by 38 points in the Drivers’ Championship.

After the inaugural Indian Grand Prix a fortnight ago, where Hamilton was again involved in a controversial incident involving Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, Whitmarsh claimed the 26-year-old was struggling under the weight of expectation.

“He made some comments which I disagree with,” Hamilton responded ahead of this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. “It’s rubbish. My issues have been much, much bigger than that – more personal. Jenson doing great is great for the team.”
