The north west, with major northern cities Manchester and Liverpool, has more marginal constituencies than anywhere else in the country – 27 to be exact out of 72.

Labour dominate the region – less so than in it has in the past – but the party is targeting 15 key seats, aiming to take them largely from the Tories after losing some of its strongholds in 2010.

Rossendale and Darwen, an early declarer at 2:00am, is arguably Labour’s most important target seat – if they can win here they could be on course for a majority.

Bolton West, which reports around halfway through the night at 3:30am, is a key target for the Conservatives

Heywood and Middleton, one of the earliest to declare at 1:30am, is the top regional target of Ukip, which narrowly missed out in winning the recent by-election there. If they win here, it could signal further wins for the challenger party elsewhere.
