West Ham want Olympic Moore statue
WEST Ham are exploring the possibility of erecting a statue of World Cup-winning former captain Bobby Moore at the Olympic Stadium.
The Hammers are currently in final negotiations with the London Legacy Development Corporation over leasing the Stratford stadium, with a view to moving in 2016.
Club chiefs are engaged with supporters over ways to make the Olympic Stadium feel more like home, and a statue of Moore, similar to those outside Upton Park and Wembley Stadium, is thought to be under consideration.
Chairman David Gold revealed on Twitter that the club would be able to incorporate a permanent tribute to Moore, whose passing was commemorated at last night’s match against Tottenham, if, as expected, they seal a long-term lease in the next few weeks.
A spokesperson for the LLDC told City PM that negotiations were ongoing but left the door open for West Ham to include a statue of their former skipper, who died 20 years ago on Sunday, aged 51, following a battle with cancer.
The Hammers paid tribute to Moore last night, with players wearing special shirts featuring his name embroidered on the chest.
