As well as tennis, Wimbledon has south London’s most lavish home

WHILE most of what’s said about SW19 involves tennis, and occasionally Wombles, there’s much to be said for Wimbledon as a place to live. As befits the home of the All England Tennis Club, it’sthe very height of leafy southwest London – genteel, classy and far enough from the centre of town to feel you’ve escaped, while near enough for an easy commute. With its spacious Victorian houses, excellent schools, and the open spaces of Wimbledon Common and nearby Richmond Park to enjoy, it’s perfect upsizing territory.

Of course, there’s upsizing and there’s upsizing. The Old Embassy, sitting opposite Wimbledon Common, is one of the more spectacular homes to come to market of late – and with an asking price of £18m, you’d need to win the tennis tournament 21 times over to afford it. Formerly the Gabonese embassy, it has more bathrooms than bedrooms (eight and six respectively), a cinema and snooker room, and the latest audio-visual technologies. The clincher, however, has to be the magnificent indoor pool, the kind of thing that’s good for a lot more than a quick dip. This is state of the art living at its finest, Wimbledon-style.
