We need a cash injection to reclaim our top four place, admits Benitez
LIVERPOOL boss Rafael Benitez has conceded his squad needs major investment this summer if the club are to break back into the top four next season.
Benitez’s side have consistently struggled for form this season and currently lie four points behind Manchester City in the race for a Champions League place.
Star striker Fernando Torres admitted yesterday that a spate of summer departures, including that of midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, meant “everything got messed up” for the Reds this season.
And Benitez says he agrees with his fellow Spaniard and has called for a hefty transfer kitty to fund the recovery next year.
“I agree with Fernando about a lot of things,” said Benitez, whose side trail 2-1 ahead of tonight’s Europa League quarter-final second leg with Benfica at Anfield.
“He talks about it being a pity we finished with 86 points last year and we couldn’t progress. We need to sign some players, we need to bring in some money. We need an investor and then we can challenge in a better way. While we don’t have the investor it will be difficult to go one step forward.”
Meanwhile, Fulham hope to have striker Bobby Zamora back fit for tonight’s quarter-final second-leg trip to Wolfsburg.
Zamora scored in the Cottagers’ 2-1 first-leg success but missed Sunday’s victory over Wigan with an Achilles injury.
