Kale-lovers in more locations will soon have to buy an item before picking up their free cuppa (a perk of having a MyWaitrose card). Before, shoppers could simply nip in and just pick up a hot beverage to go.

Waitrose initially said it was trialling the purchasing requirement in eight stores.

This has now been extended to more stores – this time in the heart of London.

From 21 November shops in Pimlico, Victoria Street and Vauxhall will implement the new rules. A store due to open in Victoria Place will also insist on an item being bought before grabbing a cup. It brings the total number of stores with the new rules to 13. Waitrose has 350 branches across the country.

It has also increased the amount that customers have to spend in order to get a free newspaper in recent months, doubling from £5 to £10.
