Villas-Boas to make use of Lampard’s versatility
CHELSEA boss Andre Villas-Boas insists he has not ditched 4-3-3 despite his tactical experimentation proving a landslide success in yesterday’s 4-0 win over Hong Kong champions Kitchee.
Villas-Boas dabbled in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Frank Lampard in a holding midfield role – and saw the Blues romp to victory in the first of their two matches in the Barclays Asia Trophy.
A Didier Drogba strike, an own goal and a fine effort from Daniel Sturridge – plus a penalty from the repositioned Lampard (inset) – earned the win, but the manager warned against reading too much into it.
“We need different structures for the Premier League and it is not impossible on Saturday we try another formation,” he said, referring to the final match of their Asia tour against Aston Villa.
“Frank is one of the best players in the world and has the flexibility to play in many positions: No8, No10 or a holding position. It is nothing new that we are trying and it does not mean we are going to use it to the fullness.”
