Michael Vaughan urges cricket bosses to consider Kevin Pietersen for World T20

Former skipper Michael Vaughan has re-opened the Kevin Pietersen debate by insisting that England’s cricket bosses should swallow their pride and select the maverick batsman for this year’s World Twenty20.

Pietersen was sacked by the England and Wales Cricket Board in February 2014 before his hopes of rekindling an international career during last summer’s Ashes were extinguished by incoming director of cricket Andrew Strauss.

The 35-year-old has since focused solely on the shortest form of the game and he was the third highest run-scorer in the recent Big Bash competition, scoring 323 runs for Melbourne Stars.

“Can a handshake take place, a mature conversation?” said Vaughan. “Or has he burnt so many bridges a new set of management couldn’t handle him over a three-week period? He could be the X-factor.”

The World T20 starts on 8 March.
