United have peaked but we’re on the way up, says Chelsea skipper Terry

Chelsea captain John Terry last night taunted Manchester United by insisting that the double winners have peaked.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson last month claimed Chelsea were too old to improve on last season, when they finished runners-up in the Premier League and Champions League.

But Terry is confident his side are sure to get better under new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, while the double winners can only deteriorate.

“I think Sir Alex realises we weren’t too far away from United when they were at the very top of their game,” said Terry

“I don’t think United have another level to go to. They had a lot of players in their team who have been at the peak of their form for the last two years.

“But we’ve been very close to them and we had injuries and a change of manager.”

United’s hopes of boosting their attacking options have been dented after Barcelona and Valencia scuppered potential moves for Thierry Henry and David Silva.

Barca boss Pep Guardiola insists former Arsenal striker Henry is staying, despite an indifferent first season in Spain. Silva’s agent believes his client does not want to join United, who he says have had a bid rejected.
