Business groups and trade unions have teamed up to urge the government to act quickly over the proposed third runway at Heathrow airport.

Unite, TUC, the British Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of Small Business and business group London First have co-signed a letter to David Cameron, urging him to approve the new runway.

The groups stated: “Both the business and trades union community are united in support for the work of the Airports Commission and its recommendation to expand Heathrow. We all believe airport expansion in order to improve both our international and domestic connectivity is an issue of national importance that is fundamental to securing long-term economic growth and decent jobs in all the nations and regions of the UK.”

The letter comes days ahead of a response to the Davies report on the capital’s airport capacity. In July, the Airports Commission, led by Sir Howard Davies, said its preferred choice for expansion was a third runway at Heathrow, as opposed to a second runway at Gatwick.
