Rocketing venture capital investment is set to boost hiring at tech startups in Britain, with the creation of 20,000 jobs expected this year.

Tech startups across the country are currently advertising 12,000 positions, 40 per cent growth in the last six months and 80 per cent on last year.

London and the south east, home to the large majority of tech startups, are creating the lion's share of jobs, with more than half of jobs being advertised in the capital and 14 per cent in the surrounding areas.

The research by Adzuna looked at one million jobs ads posted on its site at more than 1,000 tech startups and analysed their hiring patterns over the past few years.

Companies on the biggest hiring spree include King, the maker of hit game Candy Crush, ticketing firm Viagogo and hospitality company Onefinestay.

"These exciting new figures show that the technology space in the UK has never been hotter," said Adzuna co-founder Andrew Hunter.

"Startups in the UK are raising money like never before and this is leading to significant job creation around the country and, similarly to the Silicon Valley, UK tech companies are now able to stand toe to toe with the City competing for Britain’s top talent.”

Tech City UK CEO Gerard Grech commented: "It’s not just coders that are needed, but individuals with a diverse range of skillsets from digital marketing to product management. With investment in tech  at $2.1bn (£1.4bn) in 2014 and set for record-breaking highs in 2015, there’s never been a better time to be a part of the UK’s world-class digital industries."

Investment in the UK tech sector has already hit record levels this year, reaching $682m (£459m) in the first quarter.

The number of job vacancies across the UK climbed in April, marking a post-recession high according to Adzuna.
