Tube chaos: Signal failure causes severe delays for commuters on District Line

A signal failure has left commuters to contend with severe Tube delays this morning as Transport for London (TfL) part suspended two London Underground lines.

Passengers faced a difficult journey to work on both the District Line and the Hammersmith & City Line after the signal failure at Barking.

The District Line was part suspended between Upminster and Barking earlier this morning, with severe delays now running across the entire line.

TfL told commuters their tickets would be accepted on local buses, the C2C rail service and South Western Railway.

Meanwhile the Hammersmith & City Line had no service between Liverpool Street and Barking, though a good service was running on the rest of the line.

Meanwhile a reduced service continued to run between the much-troubled Gospel Oak to Barking line on the London Overground.

A temporary timetable running just two four-carriage trains an hour remained in place despite four new electric trains finally coming into service yesterday after months of disruption.

Today’s delays follow a nightmare commute for passengers yesterday when a fire alert at Bond Street station, the result of a mechanical failure, led to the Jubilee Line being suspended with severe delays.

The chaos had a knock-on effect on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), which became heavily delayed towards Canary Wharf as passengers trying to get to work piled onto the City line.

TfL apologised for the miserable start to people’s days, saying: “Sorry that we've let you down this morning, I can appreciate how frustrating that this is.”

The delays saw 60 passengers forced to walk back through Tube tunnels to Bond Street as engineers struggled to fix the failure behind the fire alert.
