US President Donald Trump has said his country will be able to work out any differences with the UK over Chinese tech firm Huawei.

Speaking to reporters in London during a three-day state visit to the UK, Trump denied the US would limit its intelligence-sharing if Britain opted to use Huawei equipment in its 5G network.

“We are going to have absolutely an agreement on Huawei and everything else,” he said. “We have an incredible intelligence relationship and will be able to work out any differences.”

The US has added Huawei to a trade blacklist and urged its allies not to work with the tech giant amid fears its technology could be used for spying by Chinese authorities.

Secretary of state Mike Pompeo has previously warned the US could be forced to cut intelligence-sharing ties with any of its allies that allow Huawei to build their telecoms networks.

The UK is yet to issue a verdict on Huawei, but details leaked from a national security meeting earlier this year revealed the government will allow the Chinese firm to participate in parts of the country’s 5G network.

But following a meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May this afternoon, Trump played down the diplomatic implications of cooperating with Huawei.

“We did discuss it, I see absolutely no limitations, we have never had limitations, this is a truly great ally and partner and we will have no problem with that,” he said.
